Great job by Union County Sheriff's Office.Fatal Drug Overdose Results in Murder Conviction in Union County

Angela Rose McCorkle, was convicted today in Union County Superior Court of Second Degree Murder and sentenced to 108-142 months in prison for her role in the February 2016 drug overdose death of 28 year old Clay Thomas Scott. In the weeks and months that followed Scott's death, Union County Sheriff's Office detectives thoroughly investigated the case and successfully identified McCorkle as the source of the methadone that caused Scott's death. After consultation with the Union County District Attorney's Office, detectives arrested McCorkle in November 2016 charging her with 2nd Degree Murder and Selling and Delivering a Schedule II Controlled Substance, namely Methadone.

Sheriff Eddie Cathey stated that this conviction should send a strong message to drug traffickers. He stated, "We will continue going after the people bringing this poison into our community. One overdose is one too many. We are grateful for the hard work of the Union County District Attorney's Office as well as the deputies and detectives who went the extra mile to bring justice to the Scott family."

After receiving multiple tips from the public regarding possible drug activity, The Stanfield Police Department conducted an investigation which led us to believe that Mr. Phillip Cunningham who was an absconder from justice with an arrest warrant for probation violation was residing at a residence in Stanfield.

On the evening of 5/14/19 Mr. Cunningham was located at the suspected residence by the Stanfield Police Department and NC Probation and Parole. During his arrest, Mr. Cunningham was also found to be in possession of cocaine.

Mr. Cunningham was booked into the Stanly County Jail under a $27,000 secured bond after being charged with Probation Violation and Felony Possession of cocaine.

We would like to thank the public for their assistance.

All defendants are innocent until proven guilty in court.
